How to Read a Supplement Label Without Getting Confused

Standing in a pharmacy or scrolling through an online health store, most supplement labels look like a wall of numbers and terminology designed to sound more scientific than it is. Some of it matters. Most of it is marketing.

Here are the six things that actually count on any supplement label.

1. Serving Size vs. Per-Tablet Dose

The first number to find. All the information on the label — dosage, percentage of daily value, ingredient amounts — is given per serving. If the serving size is two tablets and you are taking one, everything on that label is halved. This is deliberate. It allows manufacturers to show impressive numbers while the actual single-tablet dose is half what it appears.

Always check serving size first, then decide how many tablets you are actually taking.

2. Percentage of Daily Value — and When to Ignore It

The percentage daily value (%DV) tells you how much of the recommended daily intake one serving provides. It looks reassuring — “100% Vitamin C” suggests you are covered. The problem is that daily values are based on regulatory reference amounts, not optimal health targets. For Vitamin D, the official daily value used on most labels is 600–800 IU, while most clinical guidelines for adults over 60 recommend 1,000–2,000 IU. A product showing 100% DV for Vitamin D may be significantly under-dosing for your age group.

Use %DV as a rough orientation, not as a dosage guide.

3. Elemental Amounts — Especially for Calcium and Magnesium

This is the most commonly misunderstood number on the label. When a calcium supplement says “Calcium Carbonate 1,250mg,” the actual calcium content — the elemental amount your body can use — is about 500mg. Calcium carbonate is approximately 40% elemental calcium. Calcium citrate is about 21% elemental calcium.

The same applies to magnesium: magnesium oxide has more magnesium by weight but is poorly absorbed. Magnesium glycinate has less magnesium per tablet but is better absorbed.

Look for the elemental amount in brackets if it is shown. If it is not, search the form and calculate. You are interested in how much of the mineral actually reaches your bloodstream, not how much of the compound is in the tablet.

4. Proprietary Blends

A proprietary blend is a group of ingredients listed together with a combined total weight rather than individual amounts. The manufacturer declares the blend under a branded name (“Advanced Joint Complex”) and lists the ingredients inside it — but only shows the total weight of the blend, not how much of each ingredient you are getting.

This makes it impossible to assess whether any individual ingredient is present at a meaningful dose. A blend containing glucosamine, turmeric, and boswellia at 500mg total could have 480mg of glucosamine and 10mg each of the others — or any other combination. You cannot know.

Avoid proprietary blends where the individual doses are not disclosed.

5. Third-Party Testing and Regulatory Markers

In India, look for FSSAI registration on the label. This confirms the product has been registered with the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India — which is a baseline of regulatory compliance, not a guarantee of efficacy or purity.

Third-party testing is the stronger quality signal. Certifications from NSF International, USP (United States Pharmacopeia), or Informed Sport indicate an independent laboratory has verified the product contains what the label says and is free from common contaminants. Most Indian supplements do not carry these certifications, but they appear on imported products and increasingly on premium domestic brands.

No certification is a red flag. Known third-party certifications are a meaningful quality signal.

6. Expiry Date and Storage Instructions

Both matter more than most people realise. Expiry dates on supplements are usually potency dates, not safety dates — a supplement past its expiry is typically weaker rather than harmful. The exception is oil-based supplements (fish oil, Vitamin E oil) which can go rancid and should be discarded.

Storage instructions are worth reading. Most vitamins degrade with heat, light, and moisture. “Store in a cool, dry place” means not above the kitchen stove and not in the bathroom cabinet. Probiotics require refrigeration unless specifically labelled shelf-stable.
